Today was filled with a few challenges, but in spite of the
obstacles we had a great day. Some of
the roads often become impassable during the rainy season. The village we were
scheduled to visit today was one of those villages affected by the roads. We
were travelling in two trucks. After the first one got stuck in the mud, we
tried using the wench to pull it out, but the battery wasn’t strong enough.
After an hour or so we were able to get the other truck through (with the help
of the wench) so we left the first truck and all piled in the back of the
second truck to make our way to the village.
Once we got to the village we only had about an hour left
before the students were dismissed. Shalea, Viatris, Kelsey, and Todd worked
with the children in the classroom while Trisha and Valerie worked with the
parents. I worked with the teacher with the help of Samuel our translator. At each village I am meeting with the
teachers and giving them a brief staff development on instructional strategies.
Even though they don’t have degrees, all of the teachers so far have attended
at least a limited amount of college. They are doing an excellent job with the
limited resources available to them. We brought crayons and chalk to leave with
them for their classrooms. They are very appreciative of the supplies as well
as the time we are spending with them.
This afternoon we went to the stove factory and loaded 6
stoves to take to the village tomorrow. The Seminole Rotary Club sponsored the
stoves and the factory owner waited until we could be here to help deliver
them. I will share more about the stove delivery tomorrow.
